Calamari

Calamari

Calamari is easily one of the yummiest of all seafood. But done poorly, it can be downright icky. 'The calamari at Jake's Famous Crawfish in Portland, Oregon is always done fabulously. A light breading on tender rings. Delicious. If you haven't tried the calamari at Jake's, I'd highly recommend it the next time you're out.

Third Wednesday PDX

Food carts are a big deal in Portland. So is community giving. Third Wednesday PDX combines the two. On the third Wednesday of each month, a group of Portland food carts donates a portion of proceeds to a local charity. Tasty. And awesome.

Ruby Jewel ice cream sandwiches

Ruby Jewel ice cream sandwiches

Ruby Jewel started in the farmers' markets of Oregon.  Guided by creater Lisa Herlinger, it sprung from the local ingredients of farmers into an incredible product. If you live in one of the 11 states that sell Ruby Jewel pre-made sandwiches in supermarkets, you're in luck.  If you are in Portland, Oregon, you can create your own.  This [...]

Phame Academy of Fine Arts

Phame Academy of Fine Arts

Many of us can testify to the importance and awesomeness of arts in our lives.  Participation in the arts can change lives, develop self-confidence and teach life lessons.  It's something that everyone should have the opportunity to experience.  Phame Academy of Fine Arts in Portland Oregon brings that opportunity to teens and adults with [...]

The Side Yard

The Side Yard

Thanks to Jess Culpepper and Mary Buckheit for this awesome recommendation! The Side Yard brings together two of our favorite things:  awesome people and awesome food.  According to the weibsite: The Side Yard is a small scale urban farm located in NE Portland, Oregon, established in 2009 by Stacey Givens. We provide local [...]

Big Belly Solar Compactor

Big Belly Solar Compactor

Here and there throughout Portland, Oregon, you'll see a funky looking trash can. Only they aren't trash cans--they're Big Belly Solar Compactors. And they're awesome. From the bigbellysolar.com website: By using solar power to compact waste at the point of collection, each Big Belly solar compactor can hold about 5 times the amount of waste [...]

Ringlers Annex

Ringlers Annex

Ringlers Annex is one of the coolest corner bars in Portland. Occupying a triangular block, the bar is narrow; but size isn't everything. In fact, the tininess of this place is part of its charm.  Plus it has outdoor seating (when it's not raining) and is in a perfect spot for people watching. Yummy cocktails, super cool building, great [...]

Cityscape sunsets

Cityscape sunsets

I grew up in Southern Idaho, where the sunsets were like shifting paintings, the colors changing from muted blues and greys to vibrant pinks and shocking oranges, reds and purples.  The colors soak the skies over prairies and mountains. But in Portland, the sunsets come unexpectedly, tearing at the skies around the city, and giving a [...]

Pie Lab

Pie Lab

Every Friday, a woman takes to the streets of Portland with a small, wheeled cart, peddaling her best pie.  But she's selling much more than that. Pie lab, an interactive, experimental food experience borders on performance art.  Each week has a different theme.  Ths week, you could pay $4 for the pie of your choice, or $3 to risk the [...]

Clackamas River

Clackamas River

Summer in Portland is defined by a few things:  movies in the park, walking downtown, hikes in Forest Park, street fairs - and a float on the Clackamas River. On a hot summer day, nothing feels better than grabbing an inertube and heading to the river.  The Clackamas is generally slow-moving, and filled with good-natured people trying to [...]
