Awesome.

Hailey Coffee Co.

I love random art.  Whether it’s street art or kid’s refrigerator art or the art you find on a beach.  I like it all.

I also like coffee.  The Hailey Coffee Co, in Hailey Idaho combines the two.  Not only can you get a fantastic cup of joe, you can entertain yourself while you wait, looking at the artwork and poetry carved into the plaster walls.

Caffeine and culture.  Awesome.

Ample harvest

Thanks to Cathy Wellner of Hailey, Idaho for this suggestion.

Ampleharvest.org

Ampleharvest.org is an organization that connects gardeners with food pantries.  According to its website it is:

a nationwide effort to educate, encourage and enable gardeners with extra extra produce to easily donate to a local food pantry. AmpleHarvest.org gives food pantries the opportunity to be listed in a central nationwide directory so that gardeners can share their fresh produce and, garden-by-garden, help diminish hunger in America.

Totally awesome.  Take a look and “share your garden bounty with neighbors in need.”

Bike rack cozy

Biking around Portland, you see some cool things.  Whether it’s the jasmine by the Rose Garden, or the street performers downtown, biking is rewarded.

And people love to bike in this town.  Take, for example, this amazing bike rack cozy, someone has lovingly crocheted.

Awesome bike back cozy

My bike smiled when I locked it up to this.

Homemade Veggie Lasagna

One of the best things my mom made when we were growing up was lasagna.  It wasn’t just the end result that made me happy, it was the process, too.  The loving preparation of the noodles, sauce, and meat took a couple of hours, making the house smell amazing.

Homemade veggie lasagna

Now I’m a vegetarian, and Mom makes veggie lasagna, as well as the meaty kind.  Tasty.  Last week a friend made for me a fantastic veggie lasagna.  And, as usual, it was the prep as well as the food that was enjoyable.  Side-by-side we cut, sauteed and baked the creation into a bubbling pan of goodness.  I find it’s the homemade part that is the most important, more so than the veggie or the lasagna.  The preparation and sharing of a meal that makes it most awesome.

Food dehydrator

One of my favorite kitchen appliances is my food dehydrator.

Need a healthy snack?  Cut up some fruits and make whole-fruit leather.  Apples, bananas, apricots, peaches, mangoes and pineapple make fantastic dried fruit.  Or, if you want to treat your pooch, cut up some sweet potatoes, drizzle with Vitamin E oil, and you have fantastic, natural dog snacks.

St. Johns

Portland is known for its great neighborhoods.  Annexed to the city in 1915, St. Johns still maintains a fierce character of its own, with a downtown of storefronts, coffee shops, restaurants and a fencing salon.

St. Johns bridge

Aside from the peaceful charm of the downtown, St. Johns is one of Portland’s most dramatic neighborhoods.  It is one of the northernmost, bordered by the Columbia and Willamette rivers.  And it boasts the fantastic, gothic-towered suspension bridge that provides a route to downtown Portland, and access to the also awesome Forrest Park.

Ashleigh Flynn

Ashleigh Flynn

I was reintroduced to a great musical artist tonight.  Ashleigh Flynn was cruising around the venue with a little paper crown on her head, celebrating her girlfriend’s birthday, and talking with everyone.  Her beautiful energy accompanied her on stage where she sang everything from Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” to “Let the Circle be Unbroken,” all of it in a big, beautiful, blusey, folkey voice.

You can check her out on her website, and if you like what you hear, vote for her to play as an artist at Lilith Fair.  Just click the heart for “smashflynn.”

Butterfly nebula

My daughter just got a birthday card from Grandpa with this image of a butterfly shaped nebula taken by the Hubble spacecraft.  A beautiful birthplace of stars, it’s a work of art.

We’re actually putting it on the fridge.

You can download your own Hubble art online: Top 100 Hubble Images.
