Susan Brown

Susan Brown

My friend Susan Brown is awesome. For a lot of reasons. Too many, in fact, to list here. Her most recent display of awesomeness is the fact that she just ran her first marathon--the Portland Marathon.  Not normally a runner, she's trained for roughly a year to prepare for this little weekend jaunt.  She turns 50 next month. I was there on [...]

Dan Savage and Terry Miller

Dan Savage is a columnist.  He writes about being human, being a man, and about being gay.  The recent spate of gay bullying and teen suicide highlighted in the media led him and his boyfriend, Terry Miller to launch a new initiative called, "It Gets Better." Designed to tell GLBT youth that life really does get better as you grow older, the [...]

Katie Stagliano

Katie Stagliano

What would you do with a 40 pound cabbage?  Young Katie Stagliano decided to feed the homeless with it. So inspired that her huge cabbage, after adding ham and rice, fed 275 people at the soup kitchen; Katie planted more and has since donated 4,000 pounds of vegetables to those in need. Awesome. Read the story on Tonic.

Janelle and Patty

Janelle and Patty packed up and headed to Nepal.  Awesome.  They brought back the stories of girls who live in the Unatti Home in Bakhtapur, Nepal, a group home for underprivileged girls.  Even more awesome.  Watch their video, read about their journey, and contribute to the home. Filmmakers Janelle Eagle and Patricia Ramsey are traveling [...]

Kim Ruocco

Kim Ruocco

Kim lost her husband, and the father of her children, to suicide. John Ruocco, a Marine, killed himself in 2005 after being deployed in Iraq. Kim has talked to military personnel around the country and now manages suicide outreach for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). Taking her personal tragedy and putting it to use for [...]

DJ Trina J

DJ Trina J

Last week, while a pack of women was partying it up on Cozumel like a hoard of college students on Spring Break, one woman was trying to coral them into volunteering for the local Humane Society.  And she had some success! According to her facebook page: Music & Animals are two of my greatest passions in life. I donate all of my dj [...]

Bruno Serato

Bruno Serato

It's no secret that Italians love to feed people.  It's like a primal need. So when Bruno Serato's mother visited from Italy and told him to feed the hungry children pasta, he did.  And he's done it every weeknight since. Owner of the upscale White House Restaurant, Bruno got to the point where he was giving away more meals than he sold. [...]

Mya Lake Reyes

Mya Lake Reyes

There are people I meet in my life that make me stop in my tracks.  That transcend whatever label or expectations I have for them.  Mya Lake Reyes is one of those people. She is simply herself.  Ms. Senior Nevada 2008, an applicant for Oprah's OWN TV, a straight woman who works in the world of gay travel, Mya's light of individuality [...]

Kevin Abraham-Banks

Kevin Abraham-Banks

Kevin Abraham-Banks isn't your typical trucker.  Or, at least not your stereotypical trucker. Sure, he's got a shaved head and tattoos. But Kevin also knits.  In his down time. Between hauls of lettuce. In this photo he's knitting a sweater for his wife. Here's what Kevin said in a Wall Street Journal interview about knitting: "The [...]

Friends

Friends

Specifically, my friends. Friends can comfort you. Friends can play with you.  Friends can feed and clothe you and nurture your dreams.  For the last year, my friends have done just that. If I hadn't taken the leap to sell my house and quit my job to travel, I would never have known how truly marvelous my friends are.  Softball [...]
