Trail mix

Trail mix is great.  It's got protein.  It's got carbs.  It's got salt.  It's designed to make you eat when you're suffering from altitude sickness.  Did you know that?  I heard that somewhere. So I made up a batch to help me climb the Inca Trail.  And it worked!  That's prety awesome! Here's my recipe: 1 part raw almonds 1 [...]

Shish Kabobs

Shish Kabobs

It's summer, which means it's BBQ season.  Grilling up some shish kabobs and serving them with a side of fresh corn on the cob says summer to me. If you're in the mood for some kabobs, but not so much when it comes time to chop and prep them, head over to Safeway and pick up some prepared kabobs raw and ready for the grill. These delectable [...]

Okra pancakes

Okra pancakes

I experienced these litle gems on my trip to the south.  I had them at "Watershed," the restaurant project owned by the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers. They're made of thinly-sliced okra, some kind of bready and eggy batter, and then fried.  Totally tasty.  And the cucumber salad was good, to, dresed with creme fraiche.  Yum.

Homemade mocha

Homemade mocha

I'm a coffee lover.  More specifically, I'm a mocha lover.  What I don't love is paying $3.50 for a mocha every time I want one. So, for about 20 cents a cup I make mine at home instead. It's super easy with a personal espresso maker. I use a mix of Coffee-Mate Cinnamon Vanilla Creme and International Delight Chocolate Carmel, espresso and [...]

Kale

Kale

Kale is one of those wonder foods.  The kind we know is good for us, full of nutrients and whatnot, but that many of us don't know what to do with.  Maybe you get a bunch of it in your garden box, or maybe you see it at the farmers' market. Here's a tip for preparing kale so that even your kids will eat it. Buy some kale.  Not the [...]

Water

Water

Water is one of the most awesome things around. It covers 71% of the earth's surface, is vital to every living thing and it makes up about half to two-thirds of our body. The health benefits of drinking water are innumerable. It helps with digestion, energy, metabolism and about a million other things. And when you're thirsty, nothing tastes [...]

Wood-fired bread

Wood-fired bread

I'm visiting Italy.  One of the greatest things I've been introduced to is wood-fired bread.  "Pane, cotto nel forno a legna" is a staple here. The bread is crusty, flatish, and often delightfully salty, with a slight smoky flavor.  It's good.  Everything is good baked in the great, wood ovens.  Pizza, pasta, veggies.  All of it is [...]

Liquid Aminos

Liquid Aminos

Bragg Liquid Aminos have long been a staple in my kitchen.  Made from soybeans, Liquid Aminos is a perfect replacement for soy sauce. And with 16 essential and non-essential amino acids it's a great addition to your healthy diet. I also put a little over my salad. And it's great for soups, too.

Homemade Veggie Lasagna

Homemade Veggie Lasagna

One of the best things my mom made when we were growing up was lasagna.  It wasn't just the end result that made me happy, it was the process, too.  The loving preparation of the noodles, sauce, and meat took a couple of hours, making the house smell amazing. Now I'm a vegetarian, and Mom makes veggie lasagna, as well as the meaty kind.  [...]

Dark Chocolate Acai

Dark Chocolate Acai

As if we need it, here's yet another reason to eat chocolate. The super antioxidant power of acai and blueberry rolled into a little ball and covered in dark chocolate. Yum.  Seriously. You can find these little bits of heaven at Costco.  Brookside Dark Chocolate Acai.  Write it down.
