Malasadas

Plain Malasada

Malasadas are roughly described as Portuguese donuts.  These yeasty, sugary wonders make any trip to Hawaii complete.  Filled with haupia (coconut) or plain, they’re simply delicious.

To me they’re magical.  Sure, they kind of look like sugar-coated donuts without a hole.  But they’re somehow exotic.  On a recent trip to Hawaii, I found myself in a car full of sugar crazed family-members chanting “malasadas!” as we pulled up to a roadside pastry stand.  Maybe it’s the scent of plumeria on the air, but malasadas in Hawaii turn me into a little kid.

Awesome.
